When Penny Lane started The Lonely Hearts Club, the goal was simple: to show that girls didn’t need to define themselves by how guys look at them, and didn’t have to value boyfriends over everything else. Penny thought she’d be an outcast for life…but then the club became far more popular than she ever imagined it would be.

But what happens when the girl who never thought she’d date a good guy suddenly finds herself dating a great one? She doesn’t need a boyfriend… but she wants it to work out with this particular boyfriend. And he wants it to work out with her.

Only, things keep getting in the way. Feelings keep getting hurt. Words keep getting misunderstood.

Penny Lane worked hard to declare her independence. Now she needs to figure out what to do with it — and how to balance what she wants with what everyone else wants. In We Can Work It Out, Elizabeth Eulberg returns to the world of her first novel, The Lonely Hearts Club, and gets to the heart of how hard relationships can be… and why they are sometimes worth all the drama and comedy they create.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher. This does not influence the contents of my review.

When I read The Lonely Hearts Club, I was enamoured with Penny and her story. I loved seeing the themes of friendship and camaraderie that the girls all shared and the love they had for each other.

If you enjoyed The Lonely Hearts Club, you’re definitely going to enjoy We Can Work it Out! Penny, Tracy and Diane are back in this entertaining and awesome sequel and you are all going to enjoy it! I absolutely adored seeing Penny’s story continue almost directly after the events of The Lonely Hearts Club.

Penny is still the spunky girl I’ve grown to love, and I hope that readers will grow to love her as much as I do. I loved her attitude and how she stuck to her guts. This quote accurately describes Penny, and all that I love about her: “If being a strong, independent woman made me a bitch, then I was a total bitch. And proud of it.” (pg 195, ARC version) Penny is a great protagonist, and although she makes some mistakes, which teenagers don’t?

The romance in this book was exactly what I’d expect from Elizabeth Eulberg, a little drama-filled but adorable and swoony until the end! The supporting characters were also fabulous, and exactly what the name suggests. Penny’s friends were all super supportive and The Lonely Hearts Club was the tight-knit community I’ve grown to love.

While this book was a little on the light side, this book explores some deeper themes and what it means to be heartbroken.

If you’re looking for a fun and cute series to read, I highly recommend The Lonely Hearts Club and its fantastic sequel, We Can Work it Out!
