Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut, perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sabaa Tahir.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zelie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.

Review

Despite the 600 pages, Children of Blood and Bone flew by. I would usually give my spiel about what type of elements would appeal to people but this has intense action, fantastic world-building, an intense romance, amazing characters- this book has it all. I’m confident that there’s something in this book for everyone.

Zélie’s view of Orïsha is a painful one. Since magic was ripped away from the land by tyrant-king Saran, Zélie has only known grief and hard-times. When an opportunity arises for the return of magic, with help from an unexpected ally, Zélie may be the only one capable of getting the job done. But as her magic grows stronger and potential feelings for an enemy rise, Zélie may be in for more than she can handle.

Okay, if that description above did not convince you, I need you to go back and re-read it. Let that sink in. Magic. Hate-to-love romance. Amazing world-building. Did I say magic already? Children of Blood and Bone has so many amazing qualities about it I really could gush forever.

I want to keep going but I don’t want to over-discuss the book and end up spoiling elements for you. What I will say is that Children of Blood and Bone was a high-action fantasy with amazing characters and fantastic world-building. I am so excited for the film adaptation, I could really picture this as a fantastic movie which only goes to show the lush and vivid writing ability that Adeyemi has.

Overall, I highly recommend Children of Blood and Bone. It’s fantastic and definitely has something for everyone!

I saw this author talking about the book on Good Morning America last week, it was so great to see her and her parents so excited about the release. Children Of Blood And Bone just looks so good to me, the fantasy elements combined with the setting and issues of race incorporated into the story.
