Reading Recap: January

Posted February 6, 2018 by Shelly in Features & Spotlights / 7 Comments

Hey everyone! I decided that it would be fun to take a step back and look at all of the books I read in January. My classes started again so I wasn’t sure if I would get a chance to read a lot but I did end up reading 14 books, which is a lot higher than I thought I would.

Books Read

You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone by Rachel Lynn Soloman  ★★★★★ | Review

I’ve been looking forward to You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone for so long that I procrastinated on reading it until the day right before release. Luckily for me, I had nothing to worry about as Soloman’s debut novel was amazing.

Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson ★★★★★

My goal this year is to read some more backlist books and I can’t believe I waited so long to read this! If you’re looking for a great read, I highly recommend this one.

The Witch Doesn’t Burn in This One by Amanda Lovelace ★★★★★

This follow-up to the princess saves herself in this one, in my opinion, is better than the first. I really loved all of the poems.

Roomies by Christina Lauren ★★★★

I got this book as a gift from Octavia and I really liked it. I liked the characters but I do wish that there was a bit more of romance in it.

Hurts to Love You by Alisha Rai ★★★★★ | Review forthcoming

This last book in The Forbidden Hearts trilogy was just amazing. I love this entire series for its great characters and complicated family dynamics and this last book was just a wonderful way to end the series.

Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu ★★★★

I’ve been on a Batman quick lately so I absolutely loved reading from teenage Bruce’s point of view. I originally rated it 5-stars but I lowered my rating a bit because upon further reflection, I wasn’t a huge fan of the romance and did find it a tad cliche.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli (re-read) ★★★★★

I love this book and a re-read was just amazing.

The Dangerous Art of Blending In by Angelo Surmelis | Review

This #ownvoices debut novel is both heartwarming and heartwrenching. You can read my review at the link above.

American Panda by Gloria Chao ★★★★★ | Review

I loved this debut novel! Mei was a wonderful protagonist and I definitely think her story would resonate with so many teens. You can read my review at the link above.

Comics / Graphic Novels

The One Hundred Nights of Hero by Isabel Greenberg ★★★★

I really enjoyed this graphic novel! It is a bit long but definitely worth it.

Star Trek: Boldly Go vol. 1 ★★★★

This comic book takes place right after the events of Star Trek: Beyond and I really appreciated seeing all of my favourite characters again.

Star Wars: Lando ★★★★

I’ve slowly been reading all of the Star Wars comic books and I really liked this Lando story.

Your Name vol. 1 ★★★★

I love the Your Name movie so I decided to read this manga adaptation and it was pretty solid.

Batman Beyond vol. 1 ★★★

This futuristic Batman story was decent, but I’m not sure if I’ll continue reading it.
