Tips for Getting Out of a Reading Slump + some Recommendations!

We’re trying to get more creative with our posts and we love recommending books so what better way to celebrate our motto of reading and repeating than to give suggestions on how to get back into reading and recommending books that’ll definitely help you get out of a reading slump.

Read Some Comics

I find that reading some comics usually helps me to get out a reading slump since they’re so short and quick. It also helps that they can be found at a library (in-person or through an online digital library service called Hoopla– google it. It’s amazing).

Our recommendations:

The Wicked & The Divine
Motor Crush
Goldie Vance

Try Audiobooks

If you have a hobby that gives you a lot of time to listen to music (like knitting, crafting, journalling), it’s really fun to listen to audiobooks while working on those things. If you also have a few errands to complete routinely or household chores to do, you can turn on an audiobook while you work.

Our recommendations:

All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brandon Kiely
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Switch Up Genres

Have you been reading a lot of fantasy lately? Try a contemporary romance! Been reading a lot of romances lately? Try a high fantasy! I find that keeping my reading tastes varied makes it easier to move on from long reading gaps.

Our fantasy recommendations:

The Gauntlet by Karuna Riazi
Iron Cast by Destiny Soria
The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julia Ember

Our contemporary recommendations:

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
How to Make a Wish by Ashley Herring Blake

Reorganize your shelves!

This may seem like a bit of work but I find that visually rearranging my TBR pile and rediscovering books that I may have forgot I own (oops) really motivates me to start reading the books I have. It’s also a nice activity to do while listening to audiobooks or when you have a free moment and want to feel organized and productive.

What are some tips that you have for getting out of a reading slump? Let’s chat in the comments!
