Discussion Post: When do you read?

Let’s talk about something that’s been weighing on my mind: finding the time to read.

Before school started, I had time to read a book every two or three nights. I’d sit down one night and read half the book, and then finish it the next night. Now, I read one book a week when I finish all my homework and sit down from 11 to 1 am and just read non-stop.

I do have time to read *theoretically* on the bus but I use that time to listen to podcasts (which I am loving right now) and if I’m honest, the rocking on the bus makes my head hurt if I try to read.

Should I be making more time to read? I think I’ll try to spread out my time so I have an hour here-and-there more often but I just want to know: when do you read? Is there a method to your reading? Do you have a schedule?

Let’s discuss in the comments!

  1. I honestly read everywhere. Walking, sitting, lazing around at home. Even while I’m at the car or any kind of vehicle, I can read. So no, I don’t really have a schedule. I usually finish a book in a span of a week, which is all right for me since that means I can write book reviews for at least every week or so. It looks like a good pattern for me.

I only ever have trouble finding time to read when there’s a huge load of homework to do for school. Then again, I’d let that pass (since it’s educational). Other than that, I’m all right with my reading patterns.

I really don’t think you need to prioritize reading if school is the one slowing you down, but if you know you can squish in some time for reading while, let’s say, waiting for a train or in a party you’re really not that interested in, then that’d be great. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I read any chance I get. I don’t always have large chunks of time to read, so I take advantage of 5 minutes of free time if I have it. The only time I read for a while is at night when the kids go to bed. So I’m up for an hour or two reading.

And I agree with Mara on not prioritizing if school is the reason it’s slowed down. But I’ve been known to disappear from a party to read.

  3. When I was in college, I didn’t read. At all. I always applaud anyone who finds even SOME time to read amongst all of the class-related reading and homework! Nowadays, I work all day but have time to read before work, after bad, and during my commute (audiobooks).

  4. I read mostly at home and whenever I have a spare moment to just sit down and concentrate. Between everything that I have to do, I usually don’t get more than 2 hours ๐Ÿ™ But every little bit counts, right?

I can’t read on the bus either. It gives me a bad headache but imagine how much we can get done if the rocking didn’t bother us! I don’t think you should be ‘making’ more time to read. Read when you want to ๐Ÿ˜€

  5. Well since I am unemployed, I have a bit more time to read. Ha. But I also read in cars and doctors offices and pretty much whenever I can. I am one of the lucky ones because reading in cars or on buses has never bothered me.I always read for about half an hour or so before bed. Even when I am exhausted, I just need that little bit of down time to turn my brain off.

  6. It’s hard to find time to read when you’re in school, especially since sleep is hard to come by and schedules can be so unpredictable! Most of my reading usually took place during study breaks, or maybe in the 30-40 minute breaks I had in between classes. My reading now usually happens while I’m on the subway or waiting for it – though recently I’ve had more than a few late nights being glued to a book. ๐Ÿ˜‰
