2015 goals

Happy New Year! I’ve seen plenty of people share their resolutions/goals and I wanted to do something similar. These goals are both bookish and non-bookish, random and probably not so random!

Carry a pen with me everywhere. I get ideas all the time- for new posts, for writing, even for class projects. But the problem is, I can never remember some of these ideas. I actually don’t carry my phone everywhere with me (*cue gasp*) so I want to start carrying a pen on me at all times, and just scribble down my ideas wherever I can- on my hand, on a loose sheet of paper, etc.

Work on my writing.  Last year, I finished a NaNo project that I’ve been working on since the summer. I am in love with the concept (not sure about how it turned out) and the response I’ve been getting from friends is just overwhelming. I want to finish editing the project and hopefully turn it into an actual Book, or something. I don’t know, really. All I know is that I want to stay in that world, and edit the story. Oh and I want to start a new project for NaNoWriMo this November again.

Write more personal posts.  I mentioned this on our survey this year, and I want to start writing more personal posts. I love this blog but I feel like it’s hard to see ‘me’ only through the reviews I write. I’m not sure how many personal posts I’ll write, but I can try to add more ME to the blog.

Reach out to more publishers/authors.  I am really active on Twitter, but I usually stay behind and never really put in my input. I want to connect with more authors and join the community more. I also want to start emailing more requests to publishers. I feel like there are so many more publishers I want to reach out to, but I’m also so scared of rejection. I need to avoid being scared, and just go for it.

Focus on older releases/owned books.  I bought A TON of books last year and damn, I really need to start reading those! In addition to some ARCs, I want to focus on books I own vs. borrowing too many at the library. I want to make sure that I read majority of the books I buy, and that my money doesn’t go to waste.

What are your goals for 2015? Do we share any resolutions? Let me know below!

  1. Yes to goals and resolutions! Those all are great ones and you should totally contact the publishers. They are super nice and the worst thing that happens is that you get zero response. Which happens to everyone (I think?) Hurray to the new year!

  2. Focusing on owned books…I really need to do that too! I got a Kindle and a Kindle Unlimited subscription over Christmas and have been downloading free and cheap e-books left and right all day…when I still have a huge stack of unread physical books! I need an intervention. Good luck with all your goals!

  3. I think not having a pen is something everyone goes through. Everyone makes fun of me because I carry a few pens and a journal with me everywhere. You just never know when inspiration will hit. My hand has been crucial at times too. Totally contact pubs. Like Kristen said, the worst they can do is not respond. It happens. Woohoo to a new year and new goals!!!

  4. Yay I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who likes writing things down! Most people I talk to just say “but what about your phone?!”. Thanks for the encouragement, I’ll definitely start working on those publishing goals. Yay to a new year!!

  5. All of your goals are really great so I hope you accomplish them!! A couple of those I really want to do too like reaching out to authors and publishers. I’ve had quite a few rejections and they really sting 🙁 Hope I can have more luck this year! Good luck with your writing!

  6. These sound like decent resolutions! I do carry my phone with me, not because I’m using it the entire time, but knowing that I have it on me makes me feel safe. And I use the notes app if I need to write something down, something I know I will forget, like things I need to do, or writing/blogging ideas.

I’ve shut down my NetGalley account and will not be accepting as many review requests this year, because I too want to focus more on the pile I already have. Although I have 80 unread books and I thought that was a lot, when I see some people who have 650 unread books!

    Happy new year, Shelly!

  7. Thanks! I personally would like to carry my phone with my at all times, but I feel like I’m disrespecting teachers when I use it in-class, and I can’t carry it around with me at work.

My Edelweiss/NetGalley accounts are actually pretty spotless because when I started blogging, I saw horror stories of bloggers who had way too many eARCs and how they couldn’t read/review all of them. I didn’t want that to happen to me so I’ve actually been so selective about how many I request. (Right now, I only have 3 eARCs to read!)

Happy New Year and good luck if you have any goals for yourself!

  8. Great goals, Shelly! I hope you achieve all of them!

I really like your goal “bring a pen everywhere with me”, so I’m gonna adopt it! And add “bring a notebook everywhere with me”. Haha. Sometimes, my phone run out of battery and thus I’m not able to record anything. Having a notebook and pen with me at all times will be helpful.

For 2015, I want to be a better person on 31 December 2015 than 1 January 2015. I have identified 10 action items to help me achieve 6 goals – be kinder to myself and others, be healthier, be more knowledgeable, be wiser with money, be more adventurous and be a better blogger.

For “be a better blogger”, I endeavour to blog at least thrice a week. Fingers crossed that I can do it!

  9. These are great resolutions, Shelley! Plus, they’re also hecka relatable. The amount of books I have in my room is terrifying. The amount that are unread, a nightmare! Eep! One of my resolutions is to just fall back into blogging because I’ve been gone for quite some time.

And personal posts can sometimes freak me out because I’m not always big on opening up but I do love reading personal posts! We do share the publisher resolutions [but not authors because i continue to annoy them on twitter] haha

and yes! I love talking about writing. If you ever want a cheerleader for whatever you’re writing, i’m seriously your girl. I’m writing on wattpad but it’s taken over my life.

  10. Thank you! What’s your Wattpad account? Mine is shellyzev and I am going to try and get more into it this year, add me- we can support each other!

Good luck with your blogging, I hope you do everything you want to!

I am one of the rare people that doesn’t pester authors, but I admire those who do, so I want to become one of those people!

Thanks for reading/commenting and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  11. These are great resolutions. I definitely want to be more active on Twitter and to connect to authors and publishers this year.

And carrying a pen is a great idea! I have a tiny little notebook and pen that is in my purse. And I always have my purse with me.

  12. Carrying a pen is a really great idea! I actually do bring my phone everywhere with me but I still favour writing things down on my hand over recording them in my phone. My old teacher used to say I’d get weird babies if I write on my hand but I can’t help it – it’s the only place I’ll actually remember to look! But I mean, I think it’s good to carry a pen with you in general in case you need to sign something or write something down for someone.

And YOU CAN WRITE A BOOK!! You can do it Shelly! I’ll be rooting for you! 🙂

Also I say yes please to the more personal posts. I love getting to know bloggers beyond their interest in books so I’m all for it!

Good luck on all your resolutions Shelly! And have a good 2015!
