Stop & Chat

Happy Stop & Chat my dears!! I’ve really been enjoying our weekly discussions and this one should be extra fun!

Character Names! The Bad & The Boring!

A few weeks back I saw this book on goodreads that sounded like my type of fantasy read. In fact here’s the blurb (minus one tiny detail):

(Character Name) has foreseen two things—she will fall for a young man with sage green eyes, and he will kill her.
Sixteen-year-old (Character Name) is happiest close to home, tending her garden and gathering herbs for medicines. But when her Sight warns her that monsters called Troths will soon invade her village, (Character Name) is summoned on a journey to seek help from the legendary Riders of Tarnec. Little does she suspect that one of the Riders, Gharain, is the very man who has haunted her visions. Or that the people of Tarnec have called her there for another reason: (Character Name) is the Guardian of Life, the first of four Guardians who must awaken their powers to recover four stolen amulets. Together, the amulets—Life, Death, Dark, and Light—keep the world in Balance. To take back the Life amulet, (Character Name) will have to discover her true inner strength and give in to a love that she swears will be her downfall.

That sounds pretty good right? Adventure, love and bloodshed. All things that would easily compel me to want it now. Except for one tiny thing. The main character’s name is LARK. Lark. Lark?

Glee Fuckery

I know it seems silly but this one thing is what caused me to keep on moving. And it isn’t the first time! I’ve honestly stopped reading books because the character names bugged me and you can call me shallow for that but reading around it DOES NOT WORK! I brought this up to Shelly to see if I was just being a jerk and she’s had the same issue! But with characters who names are too common. John, Anna, Taylor you get the picture. Has this happened to you? Do you have a name pet peeve when you’re reading? What do you do about it?

  1. There are certainly a couple of character names that irk me. Lol. But I still end up reading the book. It surely lessens my enjoyment though. Like when I read Graceling. The guy I’m supposed to be swooning for is named Po. PO! All I could think was Teletubbies. Hahaha!

  2. Oh my goodness I’m not the only one! There are many out there that are like I!
Names are probably the #1 reason why I don’t want to read/start reading & don’t like books. They bother me. It gets to the point where they are all I notice!
Glad I’m not the only one 🙂

  3. It’s not so much odd names that bother me, but similar names. Multiple characters who have names beginning with the same letter, for example, and I’m constantly scrambling and racking my brains to remember who I’m reading about. In my book, there’s no reason to have a Katie, Kaley, and Kasey in the same story. Bugs me to no end!
