Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by  The Broke and The Bookish.

This week’s topic is to choose favourite books in any genre of our choosing. Octavia has chosen to do sci-fi/fantasy while I am going to be doing some contemporaries.

Top Ten Favourite Fantasy/Sci-fi and Contemporary Books

Shelly’s Contemporary Picks

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

If you’re a big fan of contemporary, it’s no surprise that Aristotle and Dante ends up on my list. I don’t want to explain why I love this book because SPOILERS but EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS *cough cough* that means you too Octavia *cough cough*

Eleanor & Park

This is one of my favourite books of ALL TIME. I am the biggest black sheep when it comes to this because most people I know are not the biggest fans of Eleanor and Park. My signed copy sits proudly on my shelves.

Anna and the French Kiss (Anna and the French Kiss, #1)

I am seriously a TOTAL SUCKER when it comes to cute romances. Anna and the French Kiss is just so cute and freakin’ awesome, it had to make an appearance on this list.

The Beginning of Everything

Although Cassidy annoyed me in this book, the main character Ezra is just SO DANG AWESOME so I just had to include this one on my list.

This Song Will Save Your Life

And last but not least is This Song Will Save Your Life. This book doesn’t revolve around a cute romance (which is totally unexpected) and it’s all about Elise and her love for music. I seriously love this book too. Heck, I love all the books on this list.

Octavia’s Sci-fi/Fantasy Picks

Written in Red

This was my very first true (in my opinion) fantasy read. And even though I went in totally unprepared I LOVED it so hard! The characters, the world building the PLOT!  This book started my fantasy obsession.

Shadow and Bone

My Darkling! My dear dear Darkling! This book put me through every emotion humanly possible!! And to top it off it seriously made Bardugo one of my all time favorite authors. She took something that I felt “meh” about and completely turned it on it’s head and I have to give her props for that.

Steelheart

No fantasy list would be complete without  one of the bestest (yep that’s a word today) fantasy authors EVER!! Sanderson has this way of getting a reader to totally emerge themselves into his books. You see the world and feel for the characters and you just KNOW that this next part is really going to hurt.

Uninvited HR

In my humble opinion Uninvited is the best book I’ve read in quite some time. It’s equal parts fantasy and sci-fi to me and Jordan just kicked ass on the “what if” possibilities of the future! A KILL GENE?! Who thinks of this?! Sophie Jordan, that’s who.

These Broken Stars

The best (tied with Steelheart) book I read of 2013. This book had everything to me and as soon as I get a paycheck or two under my belt I am so grabbing me a physical copy just so I can re-read it at the drop of a hat

  1. Haha, I will get to Aristotle eventually and I agree with you on Anna. I liked Eleanor & Park a lot so at least you have a fellow black sheep to keep you company! This Song Will Save Your Life BLEW UP at the end of last year with all the wrap up posts so I know I do have to read it. Also, The Beginning of Everything especially since I skipped that one for book club. I really want to get to Shadow and Bone soon too. Even if just to find out what all the buzz about the Darkling and Sturmhond is haha.

  2. I loved Shadow and Bone and These Broken Stars. From the list of contemporaries, I really need to read This Song Will Save Your Life. I’ve heard such awesome things about it.

  3. These Broken Stars gave me ALL the feels!! And it’s so pretty in person; I’m pretty sure I stared at it for about as long as I read it! Haha

I haven’t read anything by Rainbow Rowell, but I’m thinking more and more that I should start with Eleanor and Park. It’s the one that everyone seems to either love or hate; I’d be interested to see where I fell!
