Stop & Chat

This week’s discussion is about something we all have to suffer through….

COVER CHANGES!

Now someone proposed this topic a while ago but apparently the email auto deleted so I can’t give do credit. I’m sorry whoever you are, but GREAT topic!

Recently I found out that the cover to Antigoddess by Kendare Blake had been changed from this:

Antigoddess

to this for the paperback version:

Antigoddess PB

Now this is going to be so weird to say but…I like the new cover better. Yes the lone girl on the front is a little played out (do people still say that?) but I dig it! Especially the font. I’m no  font snob but goodness that’s a pretty creepy font! But I’m getting distracted! Shelly and I sat down and chatted about how we feel about cover changes and let’s just say we had some pretty strong feelings.:

Octavia H: Do you want to discuss cover changes mid-series?! Someone submitted that topic AGES ago and I think it’s actually a really good topic!

Shelly Z: oooOOOOOO that’s good!

Shelly Z: Antigoddess is one of those!

Octavia H:I think that’s the only cover change I’m for!!!! I actually like that so much!

Shelly Z: I LOVE the cover re-dos for Anna and the French Kiss, they are SO GOOD! Although the original covers did match the series..

Shelly Z:But the new covers make the series seem a little more mature and interesting!

Octavia H: I haven’t seen the new covers but now I must check!

Shelly Z: the pink and orange ones!! The old covers make it look a little MG

Octavia H: That’s why I never even contemplated picking them up! The covers were so cutsey and ugh inducing

Shelly Z: I know, right? I got my copy of Anna through a giveaway but I loved it so I HAD to buy Lola

Shelly Z: so, are we agreed? Old covers with people on them seem too childish and the new covers are simple but cute

Octavia H: The cover for Transparent by Natalie Whipple was a HORRIBLE redesign to me!

Shelly Z: OMFG YES!

Shelly Z: SO.TERRIBLE.

Octavia H: lol yes we agree!!

Shelly Z: it just looks so BLEGH, the orangey cover wasn’t great but at least it wasn’t awful!

Octavia H: Right?!

Shelly Z: YES!

Octavia H: The 1st cover was eh by that second cover was “gauge my eyes out” bad! It’s so cutsey and fluffy and it MAKES NO SENSE!

Shelly Z: I KNOW, IT MAKES NO FREAKIN SENSE

Octavia H: If I were invisible why the hell would I wear clothes that you could see?! How does that even make sense?! Why would I do that!?

Shelly Z: I know, and WHY WOULD I WEAR SUNGLASSES???

Shelly Z: IN FREAKIN’ PUBLIC AND ICE CREAM, LIKE I DON’T UNDERSTAND

Octavia H: YES!!!

Octavia H: And why did NO ONE in the ice cream parlor question this?! How did they take her order?! WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE!

Octavia H: Another cover re-do I loathe….The Art of Wishing by Lindsay Ribar!

Shelly Z: it makes no sense!!

Shelly Z: wait let me look it up

Octavia H: I LOVED the first cover (and own the hardcover) because it was different from your typical YA paranormal cover! Then they add in that darn cotton candy color scheme and two stereotypical kids on a cover?!

Shelly Z: OOO THE FIRST COVER IS GORGEOUS

Octavia H: I mean it’s a story about a GENIE dagnabit! Stop ruining genies!! STOP IT!

Shelly Z: OMFG WHAT IS THAT EVIL!!

Shelly Z: OH GOD, SO SAD SO SAD

Octavia H: Told you! I loved the “oh I’m just chilling with a genie talking about my dreams and wishing…oh and yes he plays guitar but whatevs we’re just chilling” cover!

Octavia H: It broke my heart! Ugh!

Shelly Z: UGGHHH

So have you come across any cover changes you absolutely love? Any that make you want to bleach your eyes so you never have to see it again? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments!

  1. Haha it seems like we just wrote random nonsense but my favourite line out of the whole conversations is “OMFG WHAT IS THAT EVIL”

  2. Hmmm, I really liked the original Antigoddess cover mostly cause it was unique and different, but the new one is not bad at all either! I agree the font and typography are really interesting! I hadn’t heard about the changes in the Anna series covers, so I’ll have to check those now!
One series that I really didn’t like the change in covers is the Crewel ones. The original cover was so artsy and original, really beautiful and once again with the paperpack and the rest of the books went with a girl in the cover… just… too typical!
Two change of cover midseries that I absolutely loved are the Shatter Me series (girl in the cover) because those artwork with eyes are just brilliant! And the covers of the Born Wicked series by Jessica Spotswood, this ones with the girls in the cover look great and I loved them!

  3. YES!! I won a copy of Crewel and I LOVE the original cover so much! It’s different, and pretty, and there is no random pretty girl! But they just had to change it. -__-

I haven’t seen the new Born Wicked covers but now I MUST see the pretty! And I totally agree about the Shatter Me series. The original cover didn’t even entice me but that eye?! How could I not add it to my shelves??

  4. I do like some cover redesigns. I like the picture on the old Antigoddess cover, but the font on the new one is cool.

The worst is when they do the resign partway through a series and then my books don’t match!

  5. The cover redoes for The Curseworker series were ones I hated the most. The first ones were are noir like, with black and red and they actually had the characters on them. it made the books all dark and sinister, which is what the series is. The newest ones have some weird fractal designs on them. Other cover designs I didn’t like are Moira Young’s Dustland series and the one’s for Lissa Price’s Starters. I have the original cover for that, with the girl on the front. It’s creepy!

I DO however, like the redesign for Shatter Me. The eye is awesome! Also for Vampire Academy, and definitely agree with the redesigns for Anna and the French Kiss, etc.

  6. I am kinda indifferent towards Antigoddess. I wasn’t a big fan of the original but the new one doesn’t really tickle my fancy either. I do love the Anna cover changes though. The original were cute but too MG, I agree. I feel like cover changes are always up in the air for me because I never know whether they’ll turn out bad or good. It’s kind of something I have to cross my fingers for and hope for the best.

  7. I haven’t read it, but I think I prefer the new Antigoddess cover too. Mostly because of the font. 🙂 Plus that one huge feather kinda creeped me out 😛 And yesss, “LOVE the cover re-dos for Anna” SO MUCH. So basically, re-do or original I always dig the one that’s prettier (in my eyes) Lol.

  8. I really like the new cover of Antigoddess too. I loved the first cover but this one is nice too. I like that there is a person so it could be redone in Lego 🙂 Is that sad every time I see a cover that’s one of my first thoughts, “can we Lego this cover?” haha. I’m with you…I dig the font too

  9. I really like the new Antigoddess cover! It’s more eye catching and more interesting than the feather. I liked the cover redesigns for the Across the Universe series…the metallic versions. The first cover for that book was odd looking. I like the new cover for Shatter Me, even though I hate eye covers. It just looked better than a girl giving me a sassy look.

  10. Interesting topic girls! There are a lot of covers that I don’t like in the YA genre and a lot that are well overdone, but I don’t really care about cover changes unless I have some books in a series and then there’s a cover change and I can’t find the matching covers to complete my set!! Thankfully, with the internet, these days it’s not that much of a problem…unless the publishers never release a matching cover…that really, really, truly annoys me!

  11. The Antigoddess cover change does look really nice. Some cover changes are definitely for the better, where you can tell the first one was low budget and the book started selling well so they paid to get a better cover. What I don’t like is movie tie-in cover changes. They’re really just a money grabbing ploy. And they don’t always look as good as the original cover we’re used to.

  12. I’m always a bit wary of cover changes. If I haven’t started a series, great, go wild, I don’t care as much, unless they’re ugly covers. If I’m part way through a series then it is rude and inconsiderate because I need continuity in my shelves, and I refuse to get out and buy the books all over again to get that.

  13. I don’t know if I should say this, but I like the new design because the old one was kind of a mess. A little. In a wayyyy . . .

And I actually dislike that design because of the skinny skinny girl. And the fact that I now have a hardcover I don’t know what to do about.

I hate cover redesigns mostly because it makes all those early supporters frustrated (like me, sometimes), and sometimes they’re for the worst. And other times, they’re actually better than the original, like for Anna and Lola. I wasn’t a fan of the cute-sy cover, but the newest ones are actually classier and prettier. It’s tempting.
