For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself--and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

So I originally had this long ranty, all over the place review written up for this book, but I just couldn’t properly portray my feelings properly. Then I had a fantastic idea! Do a video review! What better way to express my feelings than by sitting down and talking to you all about this book! And so I give you my very first vlog review!

If you are easily offended, don’t like the word “heffah”, or are intimidated by vivd hand gestures DO NOT PRESS PLAY! If you enjoy a good a laugh and want to see my honest opinion of The Selection, knock yourself out.

So what do you guys think? How was my very first vlog? Do you agree?

I wanted to hear your thoughts, even though I loved The Selection and The Elite (which I finished today) – but like Katrina said – it’s private πŸ™

Your impressions made me laugh out loud. They were so true! I think I liked this book because I like the show The Bachelor and because I liked Maxon. But I totally get where you’re coming from. The world building was random like with the rebels like you said. I’ll probably read book 2 so I hope she explains that more. And America was really annoying at times so hopefully her character develops more. I feel like it should have been a standalone novel and she should have just taken out most of the beginning. Especially because the book is like mid sentence and just randomly says End Of Book One and you’re like wtf? It’s over? lol. I’m glad you did a vlog though because I think it would have come off more harsh in writing, but you were able to provide a lot of specific examples of what didn’t work for you personally in the video easier. Great review!

Thanks! The written review was definitely one of my harsher ones so I’m happy that I could portray the same thoughts without the harsh effect.

I’m happy you liked the book though. I wanted to love it so much that I’m pretty sure I set it up for failure πŸ™

Your awesome for stopping out and not grabbing a pitchfork on your way!

YESSSSSSS. Oh gosh, that was an awesome vlog! I felt the exact same way about the book – well, the part that I read. πŸ˜› I ended up DNFing it soon after America’s “makeover” at the palace. I totally agree about her thought processes being aggravating and nonsensical. I felt like she was written to seem like a super good person, but the things she did were so unbelievable. I commend you for being able to finish it – that must have taken serious willpower. πŸ˜‰

    • Octavia

I envy the fact that you DNFed it! I know most people worship this book and it feels so good not to be the black sheep!

    OMG I love this! <3
I love your facial expressions and the "shut your mouth!" LOLOLOL.

And you should definitely skip The Elite, I'm on page 66 for the last three weeks because everything is boring and I can't bring myself to read on. America is basically this: Maxon! No, no, no, I want Aspen! Nah, Maxon is the one! Rinse and repeat.

    • Octavia

lol I’m glad you enjoyed it! I thought I was going to scare a few people with my bluntness! And thanks for the heads up about The Elite, there was a full minute where I actually thought about reading it! *shudder*

LOL, Octavia you are the best! I do have to say though, I’m really sad you didn’t enjoy this book! I haven’t read it yet but everyone else has been raving about it so I was hoping it would be good. We shall see!

Another thing I’m sad about: You switching to WordPress but using Disqus for comments. WTH??

  6. Oh, Chrys!

I can totally remember your distaste for it on Twitter. Haha. Glad that you struggled on, whether it was for the sake of Bout of Books or not. XD

You should have followed your conscience, and put the damned book down. Lesson learnt?

This book really does sound shallow. :/ The Bachelor in book form? Pfft.

Loved the vlog. You are made for this YouTube thing. Haha. I got to try one of these!

    • Octavia

Lesson is totally learned! Next time I hate a book I’m going to let my giant dirty clothes pile eat it! Yep it was so bad I want monsters to eat it!

And thanks ma’am! Recording these are so nerve wracking but when its up its kind of fun πŸ™‚

This is the most hilarious thing ever! But it’s also SO TRUE. The impersonations are flawless. I think that America can sort of be excused for the fact that she is planning a future with Aspen without having really thought about the consequences – she’s a moody teenager, after all. πŸ˜‰ But oh my god, the amount of I love yous made me want to barf. The world building was also underdeveloped and the attacks very random, mostly. Actually, I really don’t have anything to add to your review XD I DID end up quite enjoying it but mostly because I was able to turn off my brain and just root for America. Sort of. I’m still undetermined as to whether I should read the Elite lol. Some people say it’s got more depth (hmm) and other people say it focuses JUST on the love triangle (kill me now). We’ll see. Hmm. Anyway, I’m rambling. Love your review πŸ™‚
